I'm waiting for a team to go with hot Pink unis. Or maybe lime green.

I think Clemens will play again this year. And if its only 16 games, the money is pro-rated, so it ends up being roughly half of that 18 mil, which is definately worth the money.
Geebus' talk about the Yankees ruining baseball is pure bullshit. They weren't the ones who spent 125 mil on Barry Zito, or bid 50 mil on Matsuzaka. They didn't even drive up the prices. Every move they have made this offseason has been responsible (trading the Big Eunuch, Gary Sheffield and Jaret Wright for prospects) and they've now got one of the best farm systems in baseball alongside their core of (admittedly) expensive, but undeniably productive free agents. The only relic of their old reckless period is Carl Pavano, and with him you would have to admit they have been extremely unlucky.

It seems Randy Johnson has requested (or hinted at) a trade back to the West Coast, possibly back to the Diamondbacks, although the Padres and Dodgers are apparently also in the running.
NY Times is suggesting the Yankees might be willing in order to perhaps go after Barry Zito and/or Clemens.
I can see the Big Unit returning to Phoenix, winning the NL Cy Young and his 300th game. It would be so typical. Anyone got any stats on pitchers having their best or near best seasons after leaving the Yankees?

If the Yankees don't make another move I'll still be satisfied. Pettitte back in the Bronx was my biggest wish for this off season. They couldn't have made a better move as far as i'm concerned.

Yanks won rights to negotiated with Igawa. $26M!!
Is he half as good a pitcher as Matsuzaka?

Soriano is probably worth tying up for that long. He's pretty damn bankable. Shame the Yankees let him go for A-Rod, I think long term Soriano would have been a better option. Maybe I'm wrong.
From what I'm reading Yankees are gonna sit back and let the other teams pay the high prices on the premium free agents - especially Zito, and are even hesitating over Ted Lilly being too expenseive. It seems they will take any scraps as a fill in while Hughes gets ready for joining the rotation mid season. They're even talking about making Proctor a starter for the time being.
I must say, they seem to be very confident that Randy Johnson and Pavano will be available and healthy. I assume Cashman has good reason to believe that.
Alot of talk about Shea Hillenbrand being a possibility at 1B. I don't understand why they would go after this guy unless Torre thinks he can control his selfish attitude. I wouldn't mind seeing Kevin Millar in pinstripes, at least he's got great character.
(sorry for the Yankee centric posting, but i'm not really following the escapades of every team out there).

So Boston did in fact win the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka. $50m plus!!!
Thats an unbelievable amount of money. Lets say they pay him the expected $90m - $100m for a 5 year contract. That means in essence they will be paying $30m a year for him!!!!!
Now I'll have to admit that if the Yankees went and did something like this I would probably say "yeah, big deal, they can afford it". But as an outsider, I have to say I can't see how he could possibly be worth THAT much money. I mean, there have GOT to be cheaper options for getting a top of the rotation starter. If the Yankees sign Zito (for example), I would call it even.

Jeter was robbed.
The 2 MVP winners earned a combined $0.7 million in salary.

I'm gonna predict Jeter will win the MVP award today.
Morneau will come a very close 2nd, Dye 3rd.

Also posted on BLB...
I didn't realise that the Hank Aaron award became a fan vote award. wasn't it supposed to be based on points for RBIs, HRs and AVG?
I think its a farce. Jeter deserves MVP, but he's not the best offensive player in the AL. Far from it. And it detracts from the argument that the MVP award is not for the best RBI and HR guy becasue there already is an award for that. Seems there in fact isn't.
I don't see the point of these fan awards. They're like the MTV movie awards, but at least MTV doesn't take itself seriously.

I posted this in the Bullpen on blb, but this is a far better forum to discuss.
Yanks have excercised Gary sheffield's option, pissing him off to no end.
I think its a brilliant move by Cashman. They can trade him to any number of teams and get something back for him. They can also keep him away from the Red Sox - at least for 1 year.
Also, the way that guy mouths off, I'm glad they managed to piss him off as well. Poor guy is gonna get paid $13m and he's complaining that he won't be able to be a free agent. Boo friggin hoo.

There's no way Pujols is going anywhere. Period. So you can forget that dream.
A-Rod has some extra value next season since he's chasing 500. I could imagine him going to a non-contender. I think his ego has also taken enough of a hit that he would go for it. Better to be the king of Colorado than the clown of New York. Its sad actually, because I think he's one of the all time greats. If he goes to somewhere like Colorado (I don't know if thats even possible, I'm just giving it as an example) he could quietly chase Bonds/Aaron for the next few years. He would bring the crowds back and put up MVP like numbers every year without the pressure.

Torre is definately a goner. I'd prefer Girardi over Piniela though.
A-Rod, Giambi and Sheffield have to be history too. Move Matsui to DH and develop Andy Phillips at 1B.
