I posted this in the Bullpen on blb, but this is a far better forum to discuss.
Yanks have excercised Gary sheffield's option, pissing him off to no end.
I think its a brilliant move by Cashman. They can trade him to any number of teams and get something back for him. They can also keep him away from the Red Sox - at least for 1 year.
Also, the way that guy mouths off, I'm glad they managed to piss him off as well. Poor guy is gonna get paid $13m and he's complaining that he won't be able to be a free agent. Boo friggin hoo.

I don't want him on the sox. But good move by cashman. Get something for him. Even if it ends up being a few minor leagues (which i imagine it would be).

Yep, Cashman's playing it smart, and Sheffield's a douche. Situation normal.

I'll be happy to see Sheff OUT of pinstripes. I hope they take Giambi with him.

Do you think this would happen if it was a player that was a bit more respected? I certainly understand the move from a business standpoint, but I think if it was a player like jeter, they would have let him go without taking the option after it was apparent they weren't going to keep him.

Sheff's caused alot of internal problems. He did nothing but whine all year about the Yankees not deciding on picking up the club option on his contract, now when the season is over (which is the best time to decide) he complains that they do. He also was quoted as saying that he's the real captain of the team, and he second guesses Torre in the NY tabloids on a regular basis.
...plus that whole flax seed oil thing bothers me.
