Yankees trade trouble maker Sheffield to Detroit for three minor leaguers; Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett. All three are young pitchers, and despite some recent arm trouble, Sanchez has been highly touted.

Buster Olney reported today that the Red Sox have the highest bidder (between $38 million and $45 million) for the rights to offer a contract to Daisuke Matsuzaka. If it accepted, they have 30 days to come to an agreement, or he has to play in Japan next year.

Underachieving and oft injured (and in my opinion overrated) J.D. Drew did not exersize his player option on his contract, and will be testing the FA market.

So Boston did in fact win the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka. $50m plus!!!
Thats an unbelievable amount of money. Lets say they pay him the expected $90m - $100m for a 5 year contract. That means in essence they will be paying $30m a year for him!!!!!
Now I'll have to admit that if the Yankees went and did something like this I would probably say "yeah, big deal, they can afford it". But as an outsider, I have to say I can't see how he could possibly be worth THAT much money. I mean, there have GOT to be cheaper options for getting a top of the rotation starter. If the Yankees sign Zito (for example), I would call it even.

There was an article on ESPN about how for 51 mil you could sign the top 5 starters in era and the top 5 bullpen guys in saves...with about 2 mil left over. But from what I've been hearing he's only going to be looking for 7-10 million a year, still a lot, but much less than the 90-100 mil contract.
But the huge bid serves several purposes. Whether it's worth it, well that's up to you to decide. But really, you ensure that you get this player. Keep away from other teams, ie yankees, who you'd have to play against. Since pitching is at such a premium, they thought it was worth the money.
This is also more than a pitcher competing on the field. Signing him opens up new revenue markets in Asia so Theo and crew are hoping this move partly pays for itself.
Whether it's all worth it for a guy who's never thrown one pitch in the MLB? We'll see.

Yeah, The Cubs signing Wood back really doesn't make any sense to me. Let him go and salvage maybe a draft pick or a minor leaguer or two, he is just dead-weight. They ought to be focused on Juan Pierre before it's too late.

Latest rumors and predictions----
Moises Alou to Oakland.
Angels are very active in trying to sign Soriano. ....so are Houston and Baltimore. Houston and Baltimore are also in a bid war over Carlos Lee. Angels are also persuing J.D. Drew and Barry Zito.
Zito is th most covetted free agent pitcher with at least 6 teams reportedly making offers.
Dodgers are looking to resign Nomar.
Yankees are reportedly looking for a full time firstbaseman with defensive capabilities so Giambi can DH full time. Darin Erstad, Shea Hillenbrand, Doug Mientkiewicz and Kevin Millar are on thier possible shopping list. Also pitching seems to be priority, as they have traded for many young arms and are trying to resign Mussina, are looking at Jason Schmidt, and are in the bidding for Zito.. Melky Cabrerra is most likely to be a 4th outfielder, and the Yankees want to resign Bernie Williams as a role player and DH...also so he retires as a Yankee.
Red Sox are said to be looking at Paplebon as a starter, meaning that they will need to bolster thier bullpen especially if Timlin (who they resigned) has to close. Foulke may return to full form, but they want to have insurance. They are putting alot of effort into signing Matsuzaka, and are reportedly interested in putting in a bid for another Japanese player - third baseman Akinori Iwamura.

Foulke is gone from Boston. Neither he nor the team excercised the options for next year. He's a free agent.
