One thing that I love about hockey is the connection to the past. They name every award after a former great. The MVP is called the Hart Memorial Trophy The leading scorer gets the Art Ross Trophy The rookie of the year is called the Calder trophy.
I think baseball should adopt the same policies. With debate of the MVP being a the best hitter or most valuable could be alleaviated with two seperated but equal awards. There is already the Hank Aaron award, Roberto Clemente Award, and the Cy Young award. Why not more trophies discerning different achievements by league.
Examples- AL player most valuable to his team - Lou Gehrig award NL player most valuable to his team - Ernie Banks award AL Best hitter - Babe Ruth award NL Best Hitter - Hank Aaron award AL best pitcher - Walter Johnson award NL Best Pitcher - Christy Mathewson award MLB best pitcher - Cy Young award All-Star game MVP - Ted Williams (Already exists) NL playoff MVP - Orel Hershiser Award AL playoff MVP - Dave Henderson Award
Have some new awards like the Clemente award- Best display of sportsmanship (like the NHL's Lady Bing) - Kirby Puckett Award Best display of unselfish teamwork - Pee Wee Reese award Best utility player - Bert Campaneris award Players who played in all of thier teams games (given to all player who play all of thier teams' games) - Cal Ripken jr. award. You get the idea.

I really like this idea. It gives the award more history as well as keeping alive the history of the game.

I think the Al playoff should probably be named the Reggie Jackson award, he already has the nickname Mr. October

Positional fielding awards instead of just a generic gold glove would be cool too. The Ozzie Smith award for SS, Tris Speaker for CF, etc

I thought about as well. I also thought about the best hitter per position (currently the Silver Slugger) like 1B - Lou Gehrig 2B - Rogers Hornsby SS - Ernie Banks etc.
Also leaders in statistics like Home Runs - Roger Maris (due to the controversy involving Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire) Strikeouts - Nolan Ryan trophy Saves - Lee Smith award Batting Avereage - Ty Cobb
