Today, I'm listening to the radio, and the Sheepherder goes into this rant about how Minor League systems are overrated. Starts by saying how the Tiger's have a good Minor System, with good future talent, and then charges into the Yankees limited talent and states that the Veterans are more important.
Okay! For the most part I can agree that it is absolutely crucial to have a bunch of vets who can get the job done now. Who wants to wait 4 years to see if the kids will be good enough. But, I can also see how a bunch of kids who could get the job done in four years will be important.
So, let's look at the Braves... Bobby Cox is a living legend when it comes to all things baseball. He's built a team that can get to the playoffs with consistency, and most of his squad is farm raised youngsters who can cycle through the Braves organization upon injury or whatever, and the Braves score, win, dominate with regularity.
Of course I had to mention the Phils... This is a team that went out a few years ago and bought up a bunch of vets. David Bell, Kevin Millwood, Jim Thome, Bobby Abreu, John Lieber, Cory Lidle, etc were brought in for that win now idea. Well, most of that list is gone, or worthless anymore. The only shining spots on the team are minor leaguers who steped up to fill rolls that were vacated or failed at by these vets. If the Phils ever win a title again, it won't be because of the vets that Ed Wade bought.
So where's the balance. Is the minor league system really just a trading tool to bring in vets, or is it possible to build a squad from it?

Tonight, from the best of my memory, I'll try to go back to the begining of my MLB fan career and list teams that have failed or won using both of these tactics.

WS Champs 1990-2005
2005 Chicago White Sox W 2004 Boston Red Sox W 2003 Florida Marlins W 2002 Anahiem Angels W 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks W 2000 New York Yankees W 1999 New York Yankees W 1998 New York Yankees W 1997 Florida Marlins W 1996 New York Yankees W 1995 Atlanta Braves W 1994 XXX 1993 Toronto Blue Jays W 1992 Blue Jays W 1991 Minnesota Twins W 1990 Cincinnati Reds W
The Yankees from 1996-2000 were the show. The Braves saw a few over this period, but didn't get many W's. After 2000, we have several different teams making a once and done appearence probably the same from the White Sox, but no predictions here.. Not sure how to classify the Cards. How'd they do it? Vets or farm boys?

your arguement is well taken, but i say from your farm system you will win for longevity, free agents right now, maybe. phils messed up years ago by not paying more attention to their farm. seattle and san diego come to mine too, imagine where they'd be if they kept some of the talent they let go.

you can add Baltimore to that list . From about 85-until recently they totaly neglected thier farm system, instead relying on vets past thier prime(F.A) on offense and a rotation filled with #4and 5 starters. Bedard has been the best prospect we've had since Moose and gregg olsen .

and whatever happened to pitching prospects and pitchers overall. you think we need to go back to making baseballs like they did 70-90yrs ago. i mean, pitchers threw 4ever back then, no rotators, ligament tears or tired arms. today, few can get by 5 innings without tiring. glad to see that Liriano still throwing in the 90s in the 9th last week.

This is going to throw knots in some of what I said originaly.
As we all know, the Phils went for a huge salary dump before trade deadline. They are now down to Aaron Rowand, Jon Lieber, Flash Gordon, and a few others as the old timers. And, it seems they will be ridding themselves of even more aged players by next season. Here's the trick. As soon as these moves were made, and the team looked like a group of highschool players (young I mean), they go on a tear. Of course IF they go to post season, that veteran element is going to be missed, but right now it's looking like it is very possible to get it done with a young team.
