Ryne Sandberg lead the NL in HRs in 1990, but Cecil Fielder hit 51 to lead the Majors.

Answer #15 Mark McGwire led the majors in HRs in 1997 with 58. He was traded on July 31st from Oakland to St. Louis, and did not hit enough in either league to lead it.
